Documenting an Orthodox Elopement at Castello di Tornano: Samantha & Peter

Location: Castello di Tornano, Gaiole in Chianti – Tuscany, Italy
Historic medieval castle surrounded by vineyards and woods in the heart of Chianti Classico.
A private narrative in the heart of Chianti Classico
Located in the Chianti Classico region, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, Castello di Tornano is a medieval fortress that provides a solid, timeless backdrop for a documentary narrative. Samantha and Peter, a Brazilian couple, chose this location for an intimate elopement, focusing entirely on the spiritual essence of their union.
The core of their story was the Orthodox ceremony held in the castle’s grotto—a space carved into ancient stone. As a photographer, documenting a ritual in such a confined and atmospheric environment requires absolute discretion and a deep understanding of natural light. The silence of the rock walls and the dim lighting allowed for an honest observation of the liturgy, where every gesture and blessing carried its own weight without the need for external direction.
Following the ceremony, we explored the grounds of the fortress. From the stone staircases to the panoramic views over the Gaiole in Chianti hills, the focus remained on the interaction between the couple and the environment. The Chianti landscape, with its characteristic rows of cypresses and vineyards, was treated not as a postcard, but as a silent witness to their journey.
This wedding photo reportage avoided any form of staging. Without the constraints of a traditional schedule or guests, we were able to follow a natural pace, allowing the story to unfold spontaneously. The result is a series of images that prioritize authenticity and cinematic composition, reflecting the quiet intensity of an elopement where only the connection between two people and the sacredness of the ritual truly mattered.
For couples looking for a documentary wedding photographer at Castello di Tornano or in the Chianti area, this elopement represents my approach: a faithful, unposed chronicle of an event, captured with technical precision and professional discretion.
